National Safety Recalls - Sept. 21
Jeep Wagoneers' roof-rack crossbars can fly off, and VW Tiguans can stall because of a software reset.
The most important development today is a newly published NHTSA recall batch containing several passenger-vehicle recalls we had not yet flagged. Two stand out: nearly 100,000 Jeep Wagoneers whose roof-rack crossbars can fly off, and almost 50,000 Volkswagen Tiguans that can unexpectedly stall because of a software reset. FDA also has a nationwide gluten/allergen recall that slipped past Friday's roundup. (WBIW)
- Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer — 97,349 SUVs, roof rack can detach. Certain 2022–2025 Jeep Wagoneer, 2022–2026 Grand Wagoneer, 2023–2025 Wagoneer L and 2023–2026 Grand Wagoneer L models have roof-rack crossbar pivot bolts that may not have been tightened properly. The crossbars can detach while driving and become a road hazard, increasing crash risk. Dealers will replace the pivot bolts free. Campaign 26V584 / FCA 81D. The recall was filed September 10, and affected VINs became searchable September 17. (Recalldex)
- Volkswagen Tiguan — 49,958 vehicles, engine can shut off while driving. A software error in the body-control module of certain 2025 Volkswagen Tiguans can cause the module to reset unexpectedly. NHTSA says that can shut off the ignition and stall the engine and may also knock out exterior lighting, warning lights or the rearview camera. Dealers will install updated BCM software free of charge. Campaign 26V587 / Volkswagen 57KL. (CarsApp)
- Hyundai Ioniq 9 — power seats can trap a person. Hyundai is recalling 5,360 model-year 2026 Ioniq 9s in Limited, Calligraphy and Calligraphy Design trims. The second-row power seats may fail to detect an occupant and continue moving, creating an entrapment hazard — particularly for children. Hyundai advises keeping children away from the rear seating area while power-folding functions are used until the software is updated.
- Hyundai 307. (CarsApp)Ford Bronco and Mustang Mach-E — smaller populations but serious hazards. About 2,711 2026 Broncos have a metal burr that can tear the right-side curtain airbag as it deploys, reducing occupant protection in a crash.
- Separately, 86 2023–2025 Mustang Mach-Es that received replacement battery-control modules may show the wrong state of charge, causing unexpected loss of drive power; repeated DC fast charging may also raise the risk of a high-voltage battery fire. Campaigns are 26V580 and 26V582. (Recalldex)
- FDA — “gluten-free” flour and bread/pizza mixes contain undeclared wheat gluten. GF Blends is recalling certain Truly AIP All Purpose Flour and Bread Mix and EAT G.A.N.G.S.T.E.R. Flat Bread Pizza Mix after testing found gluten at levels significantly above FDA's 20-ppm threshold. The products had been made with plantain flour represented as certified gluten-free. They were sold nationwide through Amazon and the companies' websites, with best-by dates extending into 2027 and 2028. People with celiac disease or severe gluten/wheat intolerance should not eat them. FDA posted the recall September 18; no adverse reactions had been reported when the recall was announced.
